Welcome inspiration for nutritional drinks

Great-tasting protein beverages go down a treat at Health Ingredients Europe

Visitors to Health Ingredients Europe 2010 came seeking new inspiration for food and beverages with documented, claimable health effects. At the Arla Foods Ingredients stand, that’s just what they found.

Six innovative concepts on the theme of “Drinkable Nutrition” were eagerly sampled and discussed during the three-day event in Madrid, Spain. Divided into three categories – sports performance, clinical nutrition and functional foods – the samples drew a positive response for their high content of specific whey proteins and pleasant taste.

Trends in applications
“There is a growing market for drinks with nutritional properties. Our samples represented a summary of today’s market tendencies,” says Gitte Graverholt, senior manager of health and performance nutrition. Among the subjects of greatest interest was a beverage containing Lacprodan® PL-20. The high content of bioactive phospholipids in this whey protein ingredient is documented to improve memory and reduce the perception of stress.

A related Arla Foods Ingredients presentation on the role of phospholipids in preventing age-related memory loss was equally well received. Other concepts that particularly caught the eye were a clear sports drink made with whey protein hydrolysate for muscle recovery and a heat-stable clinical drink containing whey protein instead of the conventional protein source, casein.

Ideal showcase
Phil Witcomb, market activity manager, noted that many visitors were drawn by the stand’s use of audiovisual technology. “It was the ideal place to showcase our portfolio and talk to many existing and potential customers. We also received a lot of attention from the press,” he says.
All visitors who left business cards can expect to be contacted by an Arla Foods Ingredients representative in the coming weeks.
