Supporting cognitive development and gastrointestinal health
Milk fat globules are surrounded by a double-layered phospholipid membrane comprising extremely bioactive components. The bioactive components are present in much lower concentrations in bovine milk than in human milk, where they perform several roles in infant nutrition.
At Arla Foods Ingredients, we can provide you with a blend of these components in our natural whey protein concentrate Lacprodan® MFGM-10 for infant nutrition. The unique protein and lipid profile of Lacprodan® MFGM-10 includes bioactive compounds, such as lactoferrin, IgG, sialic acid, phospholipids and gangliosides.
Phospholipids and gangliosides are important components in neuronal and cognitive development. By addition of Lacprodan® MFGM-10 in an infant formula it will be possible to get closer to the phospholipid profile found in human milk (see also phospholipids). A recent study has shown that feeding infants infant formula supplemented with Lacprodan® MFGM-10 results in improved cognitive development at year one compared to a standard formula.
Furthermore, the unique make-up of Lacprodan® MFGM-10 is also behind antiviral and antibacterial mechanisms that combat gut-derived infections. A clinical study has shown a significant reduction in incidence of diarrhea following dietary supplementation with Lacprodan® MFGM-10.
Benefits associated with MFGM:
- Important in neuronal and cognitive development
- Antipathogenic and antidiarrheal effect
- Supports intestinal maturation and a healthy microbiota
