Kristian Nielsen - Managing Director, AFISA

The world was to be explored, and to learn from
I grew up in a small town not too far from Copenhagen, but early on, I knew that my ambitions stretched far beyond the familiar surroundings. My journey took me to Copenhagen for my studies, which later opened doors to further education in Spain and an internship in Belgium.

With a growing desire to see the world, I embarked on a backpacking adventure across South America, visiting nearly every country—except Brazil. Ironically, Brazil became the starting point of my career, where I landed my first full-time role in the Food & Beverage industry. Now, more than 25 years later, I have held various positions across B2B and B2C companies, working in countries throughout Europe, the Middle East, and South America.

Today, I am based in Argentina, where I work as the Managing Director of Arla Foods Ingredients South America. At Arla Foods Ingredients South America, we purchase whey in Argentina and process it into whey protein and permeate at our production facility. At our application centre, we support our marketing and sales efforts to serve key markets in such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, among others. Our operations are supported by a highly skilled administration and a finance team that expertly navigates the challenges of a highly volatile economic environment in Argentina, ensuring we remain agile and competitive across the region.

What truly fascinates me about my current role is the opportunity to lead and develop a complete value-chain organisation in such a complex business environment as South America, while ensuring that people thrive both locally and within the global Arla Foods structure. Not easy, but very enlightening and enriching.

People and cultures, a diversity mix enrich my world
Throughout my personal and professional journey, I have had the privilege of meeting many wonderful people. When asked, "what is the best place you have lived?" I find it impossible to give a straightforward answer, as comparing places does not lead to a simple conclusion.

Whether being with my friends in Denmark, family in Brazil, old student friends from Spain, former business partners from the UAE, or current colleagues in Argentina, the common thread has been that I have learned from and been challenged by each one of them. This diversity has enriched my life, as it is something I consider a fundamental, offering endless value. In my career, my teams have always given me so much, including today, in my current role in South America.

My team is not only diverse in terms of nationality but also in personality and belief. I feel fortunate to learn from and develop alongside so many talented and hardworking people in my daily work.

Stay curious, flexible and open to new challenges
I have always had a curious mind, which most likely has driven my personal and professional path. Learning to be flexible and open to change has been essential, especially when faced with new opportunities. While transitions, such as changing positions or moving to a new country, can be daunting, I have found them to be powerful motivators. Whenever I experience that familiar butterfly feeling in my stomach and wonder, "can I really do this?" I take it as a sign that it is the right moment to take a leap.

I could not have navigated these changes without the unwavering support of my family. Reflecting on our time living in a tiny, tiny house in Brazil with our two-year-old son and newborn twins, I recall the challenges, particularly when it came to sleep! However, looking back over 20 years later, I realize those moments were simply another set of challenges to overcome. Challenges are not inherently negative; they offer valuable lessons. Staying flexible and open to possibilities while maintaining curiosity is key to personal growth. At least in my opinion 😊
