International symposium hosted by IAEA in Vienna
More evidence-based, cost-effective interventions are essential for the prevention and treatment of moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) in infants and children. And strong government commitment is necessary to ensure their success.
These were the key conclusions of more than 350 health professionals, scientists and policymakers from 65 countries and 50 agencies at an international symposium in Vienna, Austria in May 2014.
Hosted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the symposium offered four days of intense discussions and presentations on the work to alleviate MAM.
The focus was on the critical first 1,000 days after conception – including improving the nutritional status of young girls on the brink of motherhood.
Among the speakers, Dr Kelsey Ryan presented the preliminary results from a field trial in Malawi, which is testing the effect of ready-to-use supplementary foods containing soy, whey protein and whey permeate in MAM treatment.
Arla Foods Ingredients, which is supplying the whey ingredients for the study, was also represented at the symposium.
