Quality at scale

The strictest quality and safety standards in our hydrolysate production
Producing hydrolysates that can optimise dairy production and support the health and safety of consumers requires scientifically documented benefits, excellent solubility, superb microbiology and uniform quality. And it demands world-class production facilities, too.

In 2016, Arla Foods Ingredients opened the doors to the one of the world’s most advanced hydrolysate factories. Located in Denmark, the €40 million facility can produce approximately 4,000 tonnes of high-quality whey and casein hydrolysates annually. The factory features state-of-the-art manufacturing technology as well as pilot plants, analytical laboratories and R&D facilities. It complies with – and exceeds – the strictest quality and safety standards in the industry.

With 250 employees working in shifts around the clock, producing more than 80 different protein ingredients and 25 lactose ingredients for customers all over the world, the new factory is equipped to answer growing demands for whey proteins in dairy products and many other applications. Yet it’s not so much the size of the facility we emphasise. It’s the extreme levels we go to to ensure product purity and safety.

For example, incoming whey is constantly tested, with the pH and nitrate content of samples tested at unloading. We also take samples and monitor the temperature, immediately analysing the chemical components and sending bacteriological samples to our factory lab for analysis. Everything is checked before it can move to the next stage – and traced throughout the entire production process.

The hygiene of a hospital operating theatre
Products are processed in individual production areas, where, in several cases, the hygiene level exactly matches that of a hospital operating theatre – despite being over 150 times the size. And the final result is bagged automatically without contact with humans or unfiltered air.

For all of our customers, including dairy manufacturers, our new production plant ensures access to a safe and secure supply of the world’s best-quality whey proteins and functional solutions.

What makes Arla Foods Ingredients’ dairy application centres in Denmark and Argentina the best places to take your products and production practices to the next level? Take the Danish centre, for example. It’s the base for more than 30 dairy experts. At their disposal are well-equipped pilot plant facilities with equipment designed to simulate the real-life processing of everything from yogurt and ice cream to cheese, protein drinks and more.

Rapid testing
Our custom-built machinery has the capacity to run numerous individual trials in a single day. In fact, we conduct over 5,000 such trials every year. That’s a lot of learning for the benefit of our customers. We also work with customers at their own pilot plants or directly on the production line.

This level of technology combined with our deep application expertise is made possible by heavy capital and operating investments from our company. And it’s because of this that dairy manufacturers can trust the results achieved and transfer recipes and process parameters to their production lines – rapidly and smoothly.

Worldwide inspiration
Dairy products differ widely around the world – and we’re at home with them all. Our application specialists travel the globe, sharing knowhow with dairy manufacturers and other supply chain partners. This enables us, for example, to demonstrate alternative processing styles – and bring new ideas that may become a customer’s next big seller.
