Cognitive development and performance

Infancy is a critical period of rapid cognitive development that gives infants the capability to learn all the new skills they need. The right nutrition to support this immense development is of paramount importance.

Several studies have investigated the correlation between early infant nutrition (breast milk or infant formula) and infant cognitive development. These studies show that breastfeeding has a consistent, small but significant, positive influence on cognitive function compared to formula feeding.

As research continues within the field of human milk and its impact on infant development, several milk components have been linked with cognitive development such as sialic acid, gangliosides and sphingomyelin. A clinical study has shown that formula supplemented with Lacprodan® MFGM-10 significantly improved cognitive development among formula-fed infants at one year compared to a standard formula. Infants receiving formula supplemented with Lacprodan® MFGM-10 demonstrated cognitive performance similar to the breastfed infants. This study demonstrates that Lacprodan® MFGM-10 supplementation to infant formula narrows the gap in cognitive development between breastfed and formula-fed infants.
