Casein glycomacropeptide, a natural choice for PKU nutrition
Lacprodan® CGMP-20 is a highly purified casein glycomacropeptide (CGMP) product with a very low level of the amino acid phenylalanine. Due to this characteristic, Lacprodan® CGMP-20 is an ideal protein source for phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare genetic condition in which patients are not able to metabolize phenylalanine efficiently1.
The current PKU diet consists of a low protein diet and supplementation with free amino acids to limit the patient’s intake of phenylalanine. Partial substitution of free amino acids with Lacprodan® CGMP-20 provides additional benefits, such as2:
- Improved compliance due to better palatability
- Potentially improved gut health
Due to its very high content of large neutral amino acids, including threonine and isoleucine, which compete for uptake into the brain with phenylalanine2, CGMP can help to avoid accumulation of toxic levels of phenylalanine in the brain of patients with PKU1. Moreover, due to its low content of phenylalanine and tyrosine, CGMP is also a suitable dietary supplement for patients with tyrosinemia and alkaptonuria.
